WIP: Little red riding hood painting

Red riding hood painting

Like I said in an earlier post, I’ve been experiencing with gouache, lately.

I had this small, about 2 1/2″ x 3″, canvas sitting in my studio for a little while. It had a little red riding hood drawing on it, but I never managed to finish it.

While I was doing some online researches on gouache, I read that you could also paint on a canvas with it. Since the canvas I had to paint on is very small, I thought gouache would be a perfect fit for this painting with small details.

redridinghood_illustration2Here is the work in progress of this very special little painting. :)

One of the trouble I encountered while making it was either to use some ink pens for details or not. I didn’t want it to have definition, too much. I wanted it’s look to be more “painted” than defined. If it makes sense. :p

So, here’s the end result. I am quite glad how it turned out. No pens used at all, just gouache and brushes.

I find it very interesting to be doing smaller paintings. It’s funny because Olivier tends to go with bigger canvas formats while I like the smaller ones.

I have one canvas like this left and I’m probably going to paint another fairy tale heroine on it. I’m thinking about making a small serie of paintings with them. I just need to find more canvas like this. :p

Have you ever tried making smaller paintings? Which formats do you like best?Have a great creative week! :)

  1. Fanie, I do not know how I let you slip off my radar, because you are one talented girl, and I just love the adventures in art that you share. This little painting is wonderful! I never thought to use gouache on canvas! I always loved gouache more than watercolor because the colors were so vibrant (but I am an oils girl!). I really admire your ability to illustrate- it is a talent I have always wished to have (since dreaming of being a Disney animator or comic book artist as a child), but I simply can’t draw like that!

Anyway, thank you for sharing your process with Red Riding Hood- and I promise I will do a better job at staying in touch!

      HI Erin, :)
Glad you’re enjoying my “artistic adventures”. :)
Actually, I was quite quiet in the last months, so maybe this is why you didn’t follow my blog as much. Now, I’m getting back to more blogging and very glad of it.
This is so funny, I’ve dreamed of being a Disney animator as well, as a child. (Still am, some times!) I guess it is a talent, but like everything else, I believe it is 10% talent and 90% work. :) I’m always surprised at some people who says they have “no artistic talent” how awesome they are when they try it. So just pick up a pencil. ;)
And I’ll keep in touch as well, your blog is amazing! Thank you so much for commenting here.

Oh Fanie, I am just loving this post! Seeing the little painting change as you work – I love that! For those of us who are not artistic seeing something progress from beginning to end is wondrous. Sometimes, I think I quite forget that there is always a beginning, middle and end!

And I think your Red Riding Hood is simply beautiful! The expression in her eyes says all.

Thank you for sharing her with all of us.

      Hi Pam, :-)

I really enjoy taking pictures of my illustrations while they are still “work-in-progress”. The only thing is that I need to keep my camera close so I remember to take the picture or else I have a tendency to forget while I’m in “the zone”. :-p

Aww… thank you for your nice comment about my small painting. :) It makes me glad you love it.

  3. Lovely post, Fanie!
I like to see art work in progress!
I didn’t know guache can be used on canvas, too! I have to try!
And Little Red has a interesting face… brave, wise and “funny-childish” at the same time. Good!

      Hi Silvia, :-)
Yes, you absolutely have to try gouache on canvas. It really is a fun medium to use when painting.
And yes, she does have an interesting face. I didn’t notice it that much before you mentionned it. :-D
