WIP: Hanson Illustration
I have a little confession to make: I am a Hanson fan. Yes. THE Hanson. Mmmbop. Remember? They still exist. They’re still singing. And with over 15 years of music practice under their belt, they’ve become this great indie pop-rock band.
Really.
Not convinced? Check out their latest video. And try not to dance a little.
To make it a short story, I won a meet & greet pass for their Montreal, Feb. 11th, show. Eep.
But I just couldn’t go there without anything to give them. So I picked up my pencils and started making a cute little illustration for them.
First challenge; I wanted to give them an original drawing. Sure, I could have done my painting in Photoshop, but I really wanted to give them something that was hand-drawn. For some reasons, I think it has a little more value than something you scanned, worked on and printed. Althouth I must say there are some awesome digital art, out there. I just have a thing for original drawings.
Also, if I would have made the drawing in Photoshop, I would have needed to get a good print of my art. So making a digital art piece was just a little too risqué for me as I was afraid I wouldn’t have enough time to finish it. I work full-time, had a school workshop to organize during this same week and had less than 10 hours to work on this piece. So time wasn’t on my side. :p
My idea was to draw them, just like the way they are on their latest album’s cover, but with a more cartoony style.
The paper I chose was a 9″ x 12″.
Just to make sure I had enough surface to work on. I did the sketch with a regular HB pencil.
I first applied colors on Taylor (which is the “character” on the left.) because I am right-handed and it’s a way for me to not ruin the colors as my hand always pass on the paper.

For the coloring, I used Letraset pens, ink pens and, sometimes, some colored pencils for the highligts in the hair.
Then I started working on Isaac.
And, finally, Zac. As you can see, his eyes were wide open on my drawings. But at the last minute, I decided to close them a little, more like on the cover. It gives him a “cooler” look.
Then I colored their clothes, added a grey background and Voilà!

I must say, I really like how I drew and colored their shoes. I loooove drawing shoes.
Oh, and I sketched the black drawing on the logos/signs a little more because I liked it this way rather than being all black. So, yes, I took some personnal artistic decisions. :p
Did Hanson like my drawing, when I gave it to them? Seriously, I don’t know. :p The meet & greet went so quickly. I gave the drawing to Isaac, but he didn’t say anything. I am guessing this is because I didn’t leave him enough time to take a look at it carefully and bombarded him with the things I wanted him to sign. :p This may very well be my fault.
But, you know, in general, I think they liked it. I sure did! ![]()
And, one thing I know, is that the fans I showed it to loooooved it. And that makes me glad.
If you would like to see a scanned and more detailed version of my drawing, head over to my Deviantart or Flickr.

My name's

wow, this is really good, i love your style…. and the shoes are done SO well….
Shoes are the one thing i can’t draw well. Shoes and HANDS! Gahh… I hate drawing hands.
i’m sure they were inmpressed w/ your piece, how long was your meet and greet? can’t have gone that fast….
also, how old are you?
Hello Mary,
Thank you so much for your nice comments about my drawing.
Haha, yes, shoes and hands are usually the little details that are harder to do. The trick is to think in “shapes” and deconstruct what you see. Then you add in the details. This and practice!
The meet & greet was about 20 minutes? Maybe longer? We got to meet each of the guys individually, ask them questions and/or ask them to sign things. Then it was a group picture. I guess it always depends of the time they have and how many people there are in the meet & greet.
As for my age, I’m 30. But look much younger. *grin*
LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!! I love Hanson too, and they are coming here in the Philippines this March, and I wish my friends and I will be picked for the M&G!
Thanks, Joanna.
I’m glad you like it, too. And I do hope you get pick for the M&G. The guys are so nice, I’m sure you will enjoy it.
